J'ianCharacter type: Dragonrider Appearance: Being the Weyrleader anywhere tends to age people, but J'ian seems to have aged with dignity. He's a tall man, standing at about 6', with broad shoulders. He's muscular from the turns of Dragonriding. Close-cropped blond hair has started to go silver at the temples and frames a face that is striking rather than handsome. His eyes are a pale blue. He's naturally fair-skinned, so time in the South has given him a perpetually sunburned look. Lines around his eyes and mouth denote both a life of worries as well as a fair bit of laughter. Mostly he looks like a pleasant sort of fellow, and is capable of putting on the blandest of poker faces if he needs to. Personality: J'lian is a born diplomat. He has strong opinions of his own, but he's even-tempered enough that he's willing to listen to anyone as long as they aren't raving at him. He has a strong moral code, and his sense of ethics often clashes with what he knows is actually going on in the research areas at Sef. But he's a Dragonrider, not a scientist, and they let him do his job. He shouldn't interfere in theirs. He's rather devoted to his Weyrwoman, Kyana and their children, and hates that his other duties prevent him from being the kind of family man his father was. He also loves books--what little there are anymore, and hates the fact that they are losing so much pre-pern history. He's always got time to listen to the complaints of his riders, and tries his best to be objective and impartial. He also tends to think the best of people, and is harder on himself than he is others. Every mistake tends to haunt him, and he's often prone to second-guessing and worrying. He's grateful for his friends, particularly Kyana and S'yar, for helping to keep him grounded on planet Pern and not lost in a mire of details about what he could have done differently. History: When you have a Weyr full of the best and brightest on Pern, someone's got to teach their children, who are also expected to be the best and the brightest. That's how J'ian's parents, both distinguished in the field of teaching, came to the Weyr. His mother consented to have some tests and experiments run, and these proved successful, because soon their son Julian was born. The boy was quick-witted and intelligent, and had a way of charming the adults. He shared his father's passion for history, but he didn't enjoy mathematics and science. He was quizzed as much as any of the other children by various healers, and when he announced his determination to be a rider when he was a teenager, it seemed he would be one of their success stories. Sure enough, he Impressed bronze Solrakth at 16, a bit later than they were hoping for, but he got a large Bronze, so it was obvious something went right. He quickly became fast friends with S'yar, who had also Impressed at the same clutching. It was a deep and lasting friendship that extended beyond their Weyrlinghood, so there was no hesitation on J'ian's part when it came to choosing a Weyrsecond. Information about J'ian's pets Pet Name: Amaryllis Pet Type: Gold Firelizard Appearance: For a gold, Amaryllis is a dainty little thing. She's small, but well-formed, and her hide is a burnished red-gold. She would like to think that she is an impressive specimen, but she's really not. What she is, though, is adorable. Personality: Amaryllis has a gold draconic's pride and haughtiness, but she can't really pull it off. There's something sweet and childlike about her, which is more endearing than anything else. She has the typical flit's love of music, and is something of a hopeless romantic. Information about J'ian's dragon Dragon Name: Solrakth Colour: Bronze Age: 21 Wing (Weyrling Group): Thunder Flame Appearance: For a second Pass bronze, Solrakth is an impressive specimen. He's one of the largest in the Weyr, and while it is hoped there will come to be many who are much larger, that hasn't happened yet. He is dark in color, with a long, lanky build. He tends to be rather fastidious over his appearance, and likes to look his shiniest, especially for important Weyr gatherings. He's suffered from his fair share of Threadscores, but he views them as badges of honor. Personality: Solrakth is a curious dragon, and he finds humans fascinating. Given that he was born at Sef, his main fascination is "science". He is not entirely sure what falls under the category of "science", except that Threadfighting is probably not it. To that end, he is happy to let the doctors do what they want to him, and considers himself just as much a scientist as they are. Any Dragonhealer who will talk to him and answer his endless questions is one he will happily call friend. Since his beloved Weyr is where all the science happens, he is fiercely loyal to and protective of it. He has a quick mind, even for a dragon, and is more than happy to charge in to protect those who need it. Though he has had various pleasant times with the greens, he keeps returning to Wyeth, whom he adores Weyr of Origin: Abilites and weaknesses: All references to worlds and characters based on Anne McCaffrey's fiction are copyright© Anne McCaffrey 1967,2005, all rights reserved, and used by permission of the author.
