Appearance: K_ren is around 5ft 10-11 and has a relatively slight build. Being a dragonrider has lined him with whipcord muscle that he lacked as an ordinary healer, but these are not excessively defined at first glance. His has dark brown hair, which has a tendency to lighten in the sun and dark brown eyes that are very expressive. His features are moderately attractive and ordinary, but he has always been one of those people who becomes very attractive when he smiles. In fact that is the key description - K_ren is attractive rather than handsome. He has a very expressive manner, and is a tactile person - a useful trait in a healer as well.

Personality: As an inherently gentle person, when he first arrived at Arolos, he was terrible at fighting, lacking the motivation to be agressive, and not being interested enough to apply himself to learn more than the basics. However, having been involved in several fights where he most certainly came off the worse, he decided that he needed to learn and is currently taking lessons with the Weyrcaptain.

K_ren is a fixer. Alot of that energy is focused on "fixing" patients, but it tends to leak out beyond the bounds of his Healer skills. If there is a problem, he will try and sort it out. Fortunately he has a very agile mind, and though his solutions are frequently unorthodox, they have done the trick. He will fix people, problems, the Weyr and probably Pern if he could manage it. Every now and then however, he comes across something that can_t be dealt with. That is something he will never deal with well, no matter how old he is..that_s just the way he is. He accumulates knowledge randomly, and has surprising reserves of information - often gleaned from casual conversations with his patients.

He is a genuine caring person, with a wry sense of humour and has made a great many friends over the years in and around the weyr.

History: Weyrhealer K_ren came to Arolos Weyr as Journeyman Healer Kirren at the tender age of 21 on the day after Toreth first rose. The first person he met was a rather dazed R_tal who had just become Weyrleader. Originally, Kirren was surprised to find himself at least nominally in charge of the Infirmary, but set about equipping it, organising and generally sorting it out anticipating that at any moment a more senior Healer would be appointed over him.

In the meantime he became good friends with R_tal in particular, and many of the weyrfolk in general - aided by his then limited ability to Hear dragons. At that point he had to be very close, if not touching the Dragon to be able to hear anything, but the ability was there.

Arolos and it_s continual balancing act on a catastrophe curve forced Kirren to be inventive and to become more assertive in himself, and he showed considerable development in his skills as a result. The major change in his circumstances came after he was swept away during a major hurracaine. Having been lost for a sevenday, he was eventually rescued by R_tal and return to the Weyr just in time for the first Hatching at Arolos. Totally unexpectedly, and possibly due to the fact the observers had to stand on the Sands as well owing to the Stands being washed away, he Impressed Brown Kaith and his Hear All Dragons abilities magnified as a response to that Impression and he became Brownrider K_ren. Being a HAD healer was to prove very useful over time, and there are a lot of people in the weyr who owed a speedy recovery or rescue to a dragon sounding an alert. Over time K_ren and R_tals friendship deepened as they went through some rather fraught, and dangerous situations together. However, R_tal was in love with Alba, the Weyrwoman, and K_ren was too holdbred to think that what he felt was any more than a serious intense friendship.

As difficulties grew between Alba and R_tal, K_ren tried desperately to patch things up between them being friends to them both; however, this situation altered when K_ren and R_tal were lost in Time owing to an assasination attempt.

It was in desperate straits, that K_ren realised that he actually loved R_tal and though he said nothing at that point, later circumstances forced them to confront this fact.

When they finally made it back to Arolos, R_tal had resolved to acknowledge the fact that they loved each other. The weyrwoman was not happy with this, and after a flaming row, they decided it was better to deal with it in the morning. Unfortunately, whether due to stress or lack of sleep, the weyrwoman went between...and did not emerge again.

The pair have been weyrmates since that time and have made it through the trials and tribulations that Arolos has thrown at them with their sanity more or less intact.

K_ren is actually a very good Healer, and alot of that has been due to the pressure of circumstances having to adapt. However, that very flexibility and willingness to break tradition to save a life has meant he has crossed the line into taboo area_s quite a few times. Though he hasn_t hidden this fact, he is very aware that the likelihood of gaining more rank at the Healer Hall is just not going to happen. He has upset too many people for it to take place but the title Weyrhealer tends to make up for that, and so far, most of his gambles have paid off. He knows a little of dragonhealing himself, but on the whole he leaves that to Master Welsin and his team as the Weyrfolk keep him busy enough as it is.

K_ren has been involved in quite a few of the pivotal events that have occured in an around Arolos Weyr. The Fort Occupation - which established the emnity between the two weyrs had persona repercussions. When the Threadfall was sabotaged, K_ren was one of the few who wasn_t effected through his habit of making his own Klah thus avoiding the drugged kettles. Due to his Hears All abilities he ended up in nominal command of what was left of the Arolos wings, and to this day blames himself for the fact that they lost 23 pairs during that nightmare in the sky. He believed at that point in that his adherance to the grand tradition of _ I_m a Healer not a wingleader _ actually caused deaths. In reality, it was a miracle that more were not killed. When the Fort Occupations was sanctioned by the Weyrleader Conclave, the competance of his weyrmate R_tal who was weyrleader at the time was called into question and this caused tension between them to the point that after a series of arguments, they had a particualrly bad row and R_tal walked out. This left K_ren pretty much alone and without much support in his efforts to collect evidence to present to the formal Conclave to prove the weyrleaders innocence. During the long months of the occupation there were a lot of incidents that overloaded the Infirmary, and some brave weyrfolk helped him search and coordinate the collection of evidence at great personal risk.
This was technically the Interim Weyrleaders job, T_sutar - but he was power crazed and interested only in making Arolos his weyr. For K_ren this became personal, as the man - though appointing a sadistic bully of a rider called A_tod as his WeyrSecond - expected K_ren to fulfill the actual duties. He rather mercilessly exploited his abilities in Fall, even though he knew that it was doing K_ren_s health no good to remain so connected for the entire time.
T_sutar_s madness developed into a cat and mouse powergame with the weyrhealer, blackmailing him with threats against his still estranged weyrmate into positions of dubious consent.
K_ren didn_t tell anyone about this situation until years later - and then it was essentially discovered by accident by Goldrider Wygelle looking in his private journal.
K_ren had little choice but to obey as T_sutar had showed he was willing to put riders in danger to get what he wanted.
K_ren hoped he was successfully distracting the man enabling his colleagues to gather the evidence they needed. T_sutar_s insanity escalated until it was no longer K_ren bearing the brunt of his behaviour. Eventually an attack on a drudge gave K_ren the opportunity he needed. The Weyrhealer has the capacity to remove the Weyrleaders from command on medical grounds in theory. In practise, it was down to who the Weyrguards would follow.
In an ironic twist, weyrcaptain Klaus, who had originally come from Fort Weyr, sided, at the critical moment with K_ren. Or, as he described it, with _the best interests of the weyr_

K_ren then had grounds to convene a Conclave of his own and there was a long arduous cross examination of the evidence. It was all the more arduous because by now K_ren and the weyrfolk of Arolos who had been fighting the occupation had uncovered the truth. The origin of the crime lay at the feet of Senior Weyrwoman Jesa who had contracted the Redstars to provide grounds for an incompetance charge so she could manuevre her way to domination over more than one weyr, by using a close ally Masena, weyrwoman of Fort as a dubious proxy.

It took some doing, and there were cross examinations of witnesses and all the hard facts that could be mustered. Jesa started to panic a little as the evidence pointed her way and contacted Zhak of the Redstars in a break demanding that the Redstars cover for their crime they commited on her behalf or they would expose him. He appeared to agree.

However, Arolos was cleared of incompetance and the relief was such from Laranna, that Jenith, held back from her rising from the stress of the situation, went very suddenly into rising heat. This meant there was a scramble to leave and a hasty decision made to look at the charges against Jesa in another Conclave after the rising.
As they rushed out, Sytria, weyrwoman of Ista and the most staunch ally of Arolos had an aneurysm due to the strain of the situation and her age and K_ren helped her on to her gold so they could be together between.
T_sutar, unwatched in all the commotion, his dragon rising to chase, fell prey to his delusions by eventually believing he was a dragon and trying to actually fly off the Rim himself.
Thus passed the Fort occupation and unsurprisingly, K_ren who had been overstretched for a long time fell prey to illness.
And Jesa, mysteriously died in Threadfall that following day at High Reaches, stricken by the same sort of affliction that had killed so many during the nightmare threadfall.

K_ren has, more recently had a personal trial in that the Infirmary was audited for their suspiciously good recovery rates. The Healer Hall suspected fraud and sent a well know Master Healer, Linthor to examine their records. Linthor was father to one of K_ren_s Healers, Lornal and their personal difficulties started to spill out onto the investigation. Goldrider Wygelle, a friend of K_ren_s was appointed a weyr representative and was left to cope with Lintors very winning arguments.
There main problem was that there were inconsistencies in the data that could only be explained by knowledge of a dragons ability to fly through time. However, there was a strict rule on this information and that put K_ren in a difficult situation of not being able to answer the accusations.
Fortunately Wygelle, having discovered the real reasons in K_ren_s private journal, then set about setting things right, with the assistance of weyrGuard Brucyl, Lornal_s weyrmate, they managed to get evidence that Linthor was not squeaky clean himself!
At this impasse, Linthor agreed not to skew the evidence and the report the Infirmary as efficient as it really was.

Most recently, aside from being struck by lightning in the hurracaine, which temporarily muted his HAD abilities, K_ren has finally become a father. Comepared to R_tal who no sooner flights someone than they are impregnated, K_ren has until recently never had anyone claim him as father of a flight-baby. Unfortunately the ruckus it caused was difficult because it was with Wygelle and was not discovered until she gave birth. Her weyrmates J_shar and H_po were shocked and reacted badly. K_ren was pleased but horrified to be tearing apart their relationship. R_tal his weyrmate was convinced that Wygelle was trying to steal him away, having not trusted her because of his bad impression of goldriders and the fact she read K_ren_s journal and upset him badly. The fact she went on to save his reputation has yet to catch up with him. It got very messy but eventually K_ren got to see his son, little Kirrel and adores him.

He also has the dubious distinction of being friends with Deyar of the Redstars. There is a serious _game_ between them of trying to corrupt the other to their side. Deyar warns K_ren constantly of the danger of being too open, too trusting and K_ren warns Deyar of treating people like objects rather than people. Both of them think they are winning.
